[English Article] COVID19 - Global network.
As of 2:00pm, 8 April (KST), Nepal has 9 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with no death so far. One was recovered and 8 are under treatment.
With a population of 29,136,808, Nepal is world-famous for tourism, including Himalaya trekking, and has clean air and beautiful nature.
However, Nepal could not avoid the epidemic of COVID-19, either. We asked a community radio activist in Nepal what is happening and how is the life of people in Nepal.
The Global Team of Gwanak FM conducted an email interview with Suman Basnet, the Regional Director of AMARC(Association Mondiale Des Radiodiffuseurs Communautaires; English: World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters-Asia Pacific) Asia-Pacific on 7 April.
According to Suman, although the COVID-19 situation in Nepal is much better than the world average, the residents perceive the situation as very severe.
- What are the economic impacts of COVID-19 in Nepal?
Suman: Panic buying and hoarding of essential as well as non-essential items too has largely taken place. Shelves in stores are mostly half filled or even less.
Only a few shops are open anyway. Sanitisers and masks were the first to disappear. Shelves in stores are mostly half filled or even less.
- How do people sustain daily lives in the period of COVID-19?
Suman: Unfortunately, this has made life terribly difficult for those living in hand-to-mouth conditions. Due to the lockdown, only a few shops are open. They neither have income nor any possibility of storing food.
Many such labourers are struck in Kathmandu and cities and are unable to return to their villages due to lock down.
- How does the government respond?
The government has so far paid only lip service to them and has not extended any significant help.
Also, its heartbreaking to notice that animals such as monkeys, dogs and cats too do not have food and are sufferring.
- Are there any relief activities by private organisations?
Suman: Small groups of good Samaritans are trying to help the poor and the animals in the streets, but it's hardly enough.
